Top Tips for New Runners

Running: you either love it or you hate it. I'm personally in the love-it-get-moody-if-I-don't-do-it camp, but looking back I can see that there are some things I didn't do so well when I started out. Whether you're returning to running after a while or starting for the very first time, I hope these tips will be useful for you!

1) Have route options

It's always best to plan your route so that you have at least 2 options: a shorter one and a longer one. It's always good to push yourself to go for a longer run, but if you get injured or aren't feeling so good then you'll appreciate having the short route back.

2) Get some good trainers

They don't have to be expensive (and probably shouldn't be), but make sure your trainers are generously padded. My feet are genuinely scarred from bad shoes, but now I've replaced my trainers I feel I can run faster and with better technique.

3) Don't overdress

I can tell you now that running in a hoodie in July is not a good idea. Please, especially if you plan to go for a long run, wear light, cool clothing (unless you want to be the abominable sweatman)!

4) Figure out the best time for you

Don't make yourself hate running by swearing you'll get out if bed at 6.30am to do it if you're not a morning person. I've tried running in the morning and it generally doesn't work for me, but if I go at the end of the day it's the perfect wind-down.

5) Make it fun!

Music, friends and/or a scenic route all go a long way for making a run enjoyable. I personally love going in the early evening, where I can take the scenic route through the town and watch the birds - find the time and place that's best for you, and really enjoy it!

Those are my top 5 tips: are there any that you would agree/disagree with? Anything else you would add? I would love to hear your thoughts!
